As we prepare for the start of the new year, the thoughts of many people turn to New Year's Resolutions. These usually focus on intentions for a more healthy and happy life in the coming year. Yet as we know, most of these resolutions will eventually fade away without reaching the desired results because of a lack of intentional change in the practices of daily life. The same can be true at a national level. We hope our nation will grow to greater levels of "liberty and justice for all." Yet without intentional commitment to change, we will at best maintain the status quo and at worst deepen levels of injustice based on race and income. As follower's of Jesus Christ, we have an ongoing call to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This requires not just good intentions but real commitment to structures and practices of love and justice both individually and in community. Watch the video below about a New Year's Eve Watch Night Service at Metropolitan AME Church in Washington, DC. You can live stream the service. More importantly, you can join the call to commit to this movement of faith-based, non-violent, justice for all God's children. Happy New Year, and may we commit to God's call for our lives in deeper ways in 2017.
