On May 20, 1961 Jim Zwerg, a white exchange student at historically black Fisk University, was among the Freedom Riders who were beaten severely at the bus station in Montgomery, AL. The local police coordinated with the KKK to allow the clan time to beat the freedom riders before the police would show up. In the video below, he looks back on this formative experience and shares the pain not only of the physical beating but also of the rejection by his own parents. He is one of the lesser known but great witnesses of living the way of Jesus in the face of great opposition. As we give thanks for his witness 55 years ago, may we commit ourselves to Jesus' way of justice and non-violence in our day.
