Olympic Swimming Medals and the Legacy of Jim Crow

Now that the Rio Olympics are over, it is time to reflect on what we will take away from those two weeks of international athletic competition. For me, one of the highlights was the success of US swimmers. Yet it was not the number of medals that I will remember most. Rather it was the reminder that amid this success was the ongoing legacy of Jim Crow segregation. Looking back at the Olympics, we can celebrate the amazing feats of gifted athletes while at the same time recognizing the need for ongoing progress for racial justice and reconciliation in our country.
