This past weekend there were major displays of power in Washington, DC unlike any we have seen. The inauguration of a new President came with all the sights, sounds, and symbols of a national superpower. The message of "America first" was a declaration of dominating power. The next day hundreds of thousands of people came to the Women's March in a vivid display of the power of grass roots organizing. There were a variety of well known celebrities who added star power to the occasion. Yet of all the speeches made over the weekend, the most profound one for me and many others was given by a young girl named Sophie Cruz. Standing with her family on the stage of the Women's March, she spoke for only about three minutes that included giving her message in both English and Spanish. She spoke of "making a chain of love to protect our families." In the midst of so much fear and division in our country she proclaimed, "I want to tell the children not to be afraid, because we are not alone. There are still many people that have their hearts filled with love...God is with us." In a weekend filled with displays of all kinds of power, Sophie reminded us of the greatest power of all - love. As we continue to figure out how to address and heal the great divisions and fears in our country, I am grateful for little Sophie Cruz who showed us that of all the kinds of power at work in our world "the greatest of these is love." You can see Sophie's message in the video below.
